Submatriculation Information for Penn and Quaker Consortium Students

Undergraduate Submatriculation to the MBE program

Outstanding undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and Bryn Mawr College can gain early and expedited admission into the MBE program, enabling them to take graduate coursework while still working on their undergraduate degree. Undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher can apply to the MBE program in their junior or senior year. Accepted students may take up to 3 courses in the MBE program while they complete their undergraduate degree which will count towards their 9 course units required for the MBE degree. Upon graduation from their undergraduate program, students enroll full-time in the MBE program to complete the remaining 6 units. Submatriculation enables qualified undergraduate students to use their undergraduate tuition to defray the cost of 3 courses for the MBE degree. This successful program was launched in 2014. Submatriculation students are encouraged to speak with Dr. Autumn Fiester, MBE Faculty Program Director, prior to submission of the application.

Penn Undergraduate Submatriculation

Undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania with a minimum GPA of 3.5 are eligible to apply for submatriculation into the MBE program after their sophomore year, but no later than March of their senior year.  Students accepted into the submatriculation program will be allowed to count up to (and no more than) 3 courses taken in the Master of Bioethics program (i.e., BIOE courses) as undergraduates. Students are strongly encouraged to take BIOE 4010/6010 Introduction to Bioethical Argument and BIOE 4020/6020 Foundations of Bioethics as 2 of the 3 courses taken as a Penn undergraduate. Only students who have graduated with their BA or BS are allowed to take BIOE 7010 Proseminar, so submatriculation students take that course after they finish their undergraduate degree. A worksheet that describes the program requirements can be found here. The application requires an additional submatriculation form that can be found here.

Haverford & Bryn Mawr Undergraduate Submatriculation

Students from Haverford College or Bryn Mawr College with a minimum GPA of 3.5 are eligible to apply for submatriculation into the Penn MBE program after their sophomore year.  Students should talk with their respective program advisor as early as possible. Bryn Mawr students contact Dr. Gail Glicksman gglicksman@brynmawr.edu. Haverford students should contact Mr. Todd Rothman trothman@haverford.edu . Students are required to take BIOE 4010/6010 Introduction to Bioethical Argument and BIOE 4020/6020 Foundations of Bioethics as 2 of the 3 courses taken while an undergrad at Haverford or Bryn Mawr. Only students who have graduated with their BA or BS are allowed to take BIOE 7010 Proseminar, so submatriculation students take that course after they finish their undergraduate degree. A worksheet that describes the program requirements can be found here.
