In this role, he oversaw a wide range of programs including Medicare, Medicaid, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health. In this session, Penn Professor and Health Policy Division Chief Kevin Volpp will discuss with him this range of responsibilities, highlighting what Secretary Azar is most proud of about his tenure at HHS and what he sees as important challenges ahead for the current and future administrations. Please come prepared with questions as we will devote a significant amount of time to Q and A with the audience. Please note: In-person attendance at this event is preferred. The Honorable Alex Azar II served as the 24th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2018–2021), leading over 85,000 employees with a budget of over $1.4 trillion, the largest budget of any cabinet department in the world. He was the architect of Operation Warp Speed, delivering COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics in record time. He drove U.S. Government efforts to tackle the opioid crisis, increase private insurance options, bring transparency of price and quality information to health care, expand telehealth, and more. Secretary Azar is currently an advisor to Foresite Capital, sits on several corporate boards, is a part-time Adjunct Professor of Business and Senior Executive-in-Residence at the University of Miami Herbert Business School. He is a member of the Aspen Institute’s Health Strategy Group and the American Task Force On Lebanon’s Policy Advisory Board.
