"Toward a Healthier Food Environment" Toward A Healthier Food Environment Sophia Hua, PhD, MPH Assistant Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Policy University of Pennsylvania Our food environment is composed of many factors that make the healthier choice the more difficult one. In this talk, I will focus on two aspects of the environment that have large impacts on food choice and health: portion sizes and advertising. First, I will present work on how we can use social norms and labeling to prompt people to choose smaller portions when dining out. I will present the findings from an online study that we conducted and then describe an ongoing study that tests the intervention in a real-world setting. Our food choices are influenced not only by the amount of food presented in front of us, but also by the multi-billion dollars that food and beverage companies spend on advertising. To this end, I will talk about how beverage advertising on mass media platforms was affected by the Philadelphia beverage tax. Lunch provided. Streaming available via Zoom.
