June 2, 2022 12 - 1 PM EST Hybrid: 1104 Blockley Hall or https://pennmedicine.zoom.us/j/97302343736 "Genetics, Economic Choices, and Income" This paper studies the causal relationship between genetics, economic choices, and income. The genetic measure is the polygenic index for educational attainment (EA PGI). One’s EA PGI is random conditional on the EA PGIs of one’s parents, which is used to estimate its causal effects. The EA PGI affects educational and occupational choices as well as income. These choices underlie the relationship between genetics and income. Suggestive evidence is presented that fluid intelligence and present focus may partly explain how genetics affects choices. Genetic effects are economically meaningful, being of the same order of magnitude as effects of family environment. About Dr. Carvalho: His areas of research are in behavioral economics, development economics, and social genomics. He studies causes and consequences of poverty and causal determinants of decision-making. His research has been published in the American Economic Review, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, The Review of Economics and Statistics, Demography, and others. He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Hybrid: 1104 Blockley Hall or Zoom Penn Medical Ethics
