Dr. Amol Navathe Launches Payment Insights Team

Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Medicine Amol Navathe, MD, PhD, has launched the Payment Insights Team, an interdisciplinary team of experts based in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania that uses insights from economics and behavioral science to analyze existing policy effects and design, test, and evaluate financial and non-financial interventions that can improve care in pragmatic, real-world settings.

The team collaborates with health insurer, health system, physician practice and policymaker partners to achieve organizational and societal goals of greater health care value and equity.

“The Payment Insights Team is on a mission to make health care payment evidence-based and equitable,” Dr. Navathe said. “Our team uses behavioral insights to design programs that drive real practice change and the latest econometric techniques to evaluate payment policies. We are thrilled to partner with so many health care organizations to translate these advances into real world settings.”

Some of their ongoing projects focus on the impact of alternative payment models on the costs and quality of health care; financial and non-financial incentive design, including behavioral economics, to drive clinician practice change; and predictive analytics and informatics to improve health care delivery.

Current areas of focus include bundled payments, large scale re-design of physician and hospital payment models, optimal use of performance feedback in health care (e.g., to decrease opioid prescribing), and design of predictive models to drive behavior change.
