Atheendar Venkataramani co-leads new almost $10M NIH grant

"In an unprecedented effort to address the harmful effects of structural racism on health, 60 predominantly Black neighborhoods in Philadelphia will be part of an ambitious study to assess the impact of a multi-component intervention addressing both environmental and economic injustice on health and well-being."

Eugenia C. South, MD, MHSP (assistant professor of Emergency Medicine, and faculty director of the Penn Urban Health Lab) and Atheendar Venkataramani, MD, PhD (assistnat professor MEHP and director of the Opportunity for Health Lab) are the Co-PIs awarded the NIH grant 1U01OD033246-01 through the NIH's Common Fund's Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity initiative, which awarded a total of 11 grants.

“Previous efforts to reduce racial health disparities have been less impactful than we would like because they often only address a small number of the many mechanisms by which structural racism harms health. Our multi-component intervention is designed to address these multiple mechanisms all at once.” said Atheendar Venkataramani.
