McCoy & Emanuel: Why There Are No “Potential” Conflicts of Interest

All professions have a primary interest. In medicine, the physician’s primary interest is to promote the well-being of patients through direct care, and the biomedical researcher’s primary interest is to produce generalizable knowledge. Physicians also engage in other activities such as continuing medical education courses, writing review articles, and participating in guideline panels; each of these, similar to clinical care and research, is subject to COI.
