The Master of Bioethics Classroom Experience

The Penn Master of Bioethics classroom brings together an exceptional community of learners: recent college graduates, medical students, law students, research coordinators, doctoral students across the health sciences, clinical nurses, patient advocates, practicing physicians, attorneys, social workers, and public health professionals. Meeting together in person each week, this remarkable diversity of disciplines, professional experience, and career stages transforms every seminar into a rigorous exchange of ideas, where complex ethical questions are examined from multiple perspectives.

Every course is taught by standing faculty with active research programs who are recognized leaders in their fields. As a result, classroom discussions are informed by the latest scholarship while remaining firmly connected to the ethical challenges confronting medicine, science, health policy, and society.

The curriculum reflects one of the field’s broadest and most diverse portfolios of graduate bioethics courses. While foundational offerings are available on a regular basis, specialized seminars rotate throughout the academic year, allowing students to choose from an extensive and continually evolving range of subjects over the course of their studies. Students engage with foundational areas such as research ethics, clinical ethics, and pediatric ethics while exploring emerging domains including the ethics of artificial intelligence, neuroethics, disability bioethics, and bioethics and social media. Throughout the program, intellectual rigor, interdisciplinary dialogue, and engagement with real-world ethical problems prepare graduates to address the increasingly complex moral questions shaping healthcare, biomedical research, public health, and public policy.
