Cultivating Student Research

The Penn MBE Program maintains a longstanding commitment to fostering student scholarship through its Research Mentorship Program, in which students apprentice under the guidance of a faculty member on a collaborative project designed to culminate in a peer-reviewed publication within the bioethics scholarly literature. The program's record of success is evidenced by the works compiled in the Recently Published Mentored Research Papers repository.

Students are strongly encouraged to disseminate their original research at professional conferences, and the program provides a conference travel stipend to help offset associated costs. Each academic year, three students are selected to participate in an all-expenses-paid trip to Oxford, England, for the Penn–Oxford Graduate Student Symposium — a joint forum at which MBE students and doctoral candidates from the Ethox Centre present their scholarship alongside faculty commentary.

To date, the MBE Program has produced more than 150 scholars, whose contributions are recognized in the MBE/MSME Alumni Scholars listing. In honor of these achievements, the program hosts the MBE/MSME Alumni Scholars Colloquium — a distinguished series that brings alumni bioethics scholars to campus on six occasions throughout the academic year.
