Biomeditations Book Talk: Dr. Jonathan Moreno, PhD
3:00pm - 4:30pm • Biomedical Library (3610 Hamilton Walk, Philadelphia, PA 19104)
Everyone Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die:
Bioethics and the Transformation of Health Care in America
Our final book talk of the year in the Biomed Library presents Penn Integrates Knowledge professor, Dr. Jonathan Moreno, the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Policy, History and Sociology of Science, and Philosophy. Dr. Moreno will be talking about the book he recently co-authored with University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann, Everyone Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die: Bioethics and the Transformation of Health Care in America, a critically acclaimed survey of the history of bioethics in America and how the field has influenced policy and politicization of health care in this nation over the past half-Century.
Drs. Gutmann and Moreno both have played significant roles in US health care and the development of bioethical thought and practice, through their extensive and influential writing, and through service on President Barack Obama’s Bioethics Commission. Their new work is an accessible and lucid account of how philosophy has influenced the culture of medical practice, the status of physicians, and the way health care decisions are made by patients and practitioners.
